ROMANS 6:1-11 DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE IN CHRIST

1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2. May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7. for he who has died is freed from sin. 8. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9. knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

GENESIS 21:8-21 HAGAR SENT AWAY

8. The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 9. Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking. 10. Therefore she said to Abraham, ``Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac." 11. The matter distressed Abraham greatly because of his son. 12. But God said to Abraham, ``Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named. 13. ``And of the son of the maid I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant." 14. So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba. 15. When the water in the skin was used up, she left the boy under one of the bushes. 16. Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, ``Do not let me see the boy die." And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept. 17. God heard the lad crying; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ``What is the matter with you, Hagar? Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18. ``Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him by the hand, for I will make a great nation of him." 19. Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the lad a drink. 20. God was with the lad, and he grew; and he lived in the wilderness and became an archer. 21. He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

JOHN 15:1-8 BEARING FRUIT AS DISCIPLES

1. ``I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2. ``Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3. ``You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4. ``Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5. ``I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6. ``If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7. ``If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8. ``My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

LUKE 14:25-35 COUNTING THE COST

25. Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26. ``If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27. ``Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28. ``For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? 29. ``Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, 30. saying, `This man began to build and was not able to finish.' 31. ``Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32. ``Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33. ``So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions. 34. ``Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35. ``It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

MATTHEW 16:21-26 TAKING UP YOUR CROSS

21. From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, ``God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." 23. But He turned and said to Peter, ``Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." 24. Then Jesus said to His disciples, ``If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25. ``For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26. ``For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

MATTHEW 10:24-39 CALL AND COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

24. ``A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25. ``It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household! 26. ``Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27. ``What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. 28. ``Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29. ``Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30. ``But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31. ``So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows. 32. ``Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33. ``But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. 34. ``Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35. ``For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; 36. and A MAN'S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD. 37. ``He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38. ``And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39. ``He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.

2 THESSALONIANS 2:13-3:5 THE LIFE OF THOSE GOD CHOOSES

13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ROMANS 5:1-8 PEACE AND HOPE

1. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2. through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4. and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5. and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
