GENESIS 1:1-2:4A THE BEGINNING

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light ‘day’, and the darkness he called ‘night’. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.

MATTHEW 28:16-20 BAPTISM IN THE TRIUNE NAME

16. But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. 18. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ``All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19. ``Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20. teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

PSALM 104:24-35 WONDER AT GOD'S CREATION

24. O LORD, how many are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all; The earth is full of Your possessions. 25. There is the sea, great and broad, In which are swarms without number, Animals both small and great. 26. There the ships move along, And Leviathan, which You have formed to sport in it. 27. They all wait for You To give them their food in due season. 28. You give to them, they gather it up; You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good. 29. You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their spirit, they expire And return to their dust. 30. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the ground. 31. Let the glory of the LORD endure forever; Let the LORD be glad in His works; 32. He looks at the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smoke. 33. I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34. Let my meditation be pleasing to Him; As for me, I shall be glad in the LORD. 35. Let sinners be consumed from the earth And let the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD!

1 CORINTHIANS 12:3-13 UNITY AND DIVERSITY IN THE BODY

3. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, ``Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, ``Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. 4. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9. to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10. and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. 12. For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

ACTS 4:23-31 THE BELIEVERS PRAY FOR BOLDNESS

23. When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24. And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, ``O Lord, it is You who MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, 25. who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said, `WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS? 26. `THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.' 27. ``For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28. to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur. 29. ``And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence, 30. while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus." 31. And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

ACTS 4:5-21 PETER AND JOHN GIVE WITNESS

5. On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem; 6. and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent. 7. When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, ``By what power, or in what name, have you done this?" 8. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ``Rulers and elders of the people, 9. if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, 10. let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11. ``He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone. 12. ``And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved." 13. Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. 14. And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. 15. But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another, 16. saying, ``What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17. ``But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name." 18. And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19. But Peter and John answered and said to them, ``Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; 20. for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard." 21. When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened;

EZEKIEL 39:7-8, 21-29 THE SPIRIT IS PROMISED

7 ‘“I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned, and the nations will know that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel. 8 It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day I have spoken of. 21 ‘I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them. 22 From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. 24 I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offences, and I hid my face from them. 25 ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob and will have compassion on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name. 26 They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed towards me when they lived in safety in their land with no one to make them afraid. 27 When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations. 28 Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them to their own land, not leaving any behind. 29 I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.’

JOEL 2:18-29 GOD WILL POUR OUT HIS SPIRIT

18. Then the LORD will be zealous for His land And will have pity on His people. 19. The LORD will answer and say to His people, ``Behold, I am going to send you grain, new wine and oil, And you will be satisfied in full with them; And I will never again make you a reproach among the nations. 20. ``But I will remove the northern army far from you, And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land, And its vanguard into the eastern sea, And its rear guard into the western sea. And its stench will arise and its foul smell will come up, For it has done great things." 21. Do not fear, O land, rejoice and be glad, For the LORD has done great things. 22. Do not fear, beasts of the field, For the pastures of the wilderness have turned green, For the tree has borne its fruit, The fig tree and the vine have yielded in full. 23. So rejoice, O sons of Zion, And be glad in the LORD your God; For He has given you the early rain for your vindication. And He has poured down for you the rain, The early and latter rain as before. 24. The threshing floors will be full of grain, And the vats will overflow with the new wine and oil. 25. ``Then I will make up to you for the years That the swarming locust has eaten, The creeping locust, the stripping locust and the gnawing locust, My great army which I sent among you. 26. ``You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied And praise the name of the LORD your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; Then My people will never be put to shame. 27. ``Thus you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the LORD your God, And there is no other; And My people will never be put to shame. 28. ``It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29. ``Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

ACTS 2:1-12 THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES

1. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. 5. Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6. And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. 7. They were amazed and astonished, saying, ``Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8. ``And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? 9. ``Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10. Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11. Cretans and Arabs--we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God." 12. And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, ``What does this mean?"
