When I consider Your heavens

Have you ever stood and looked at the sky (day or night) and considered how small and insignificant you are in comparison? This week, we join the Psalmist in considering exactly that notion, and maybe even join in with the “Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth” that bookends Psalm 8.

Psalm 8

1 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. 2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, nd the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

9 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Pentecost. The birthday of the church. A celebration. Signs and wonders. A sound like the rush of a violent wind. Tongues of fire. The miraculous ability to speak other languages. The Holy Spirit poured out. Three thousand people baptized! Wow! Just wow! No wonder all the people were amazed and perplexed. No wonder they ask: “What does this mean?”

Good question! What does this mean? What does it mean for us today?

I think it means we’ve got a problem.

Majesty and Ministry

As a rule, Ascension Day is hardly remembered. There is no special holiday to mark the occasion and it was work as usual for most of us on Thursday. But St Augustine said "This is that festival which confirms the grace of all the festivals together." So how can this blink-and-you-miss-it day on the church calendar reveal God's majesty and ministry to us?

You are not alone.

Jesus said to his disciples, “I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you”.

The world can be a frightening place, particularly for the millions of orphans in refugee camps in Africa, Asia and Europe. Even in Australia, there are many who feel alone, deserted, abandoned, unloved, desolate or without a future. Jesus gives us comfort, strength and unconditional love so we know that we are in a special family, in God’s family.

That unconditional love is also shown so often in our earthly families where our fathers and mothers would do almost anything for us and support. Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day we celebrate and give thanks for the contributions of all mothers in our lives. As the great Americal poet, Emily Dickinson wrote: “A mother is the one to whom you hurry when you are troubled”.
